How to Replace a Swimming Pool Light Bulb

by:Guangli     2020-09-04
Changing a light bulb is always an inconvenience, but it can become a real hassle when the light is in your pool. When a swimming pool light goes out, the pool light will have to be replaced in most cases. This is because water has seeped into the light and the ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) has failed. Basically, you have a bulb that is burned out.
Changing light bulbs in your pool can be hazardous because you are dealing with water and electricity. To prevent electric shock and even death, it is necessary to use extreme caution when replacing a light bulb in your pool. So, just how does one go about replacing a swimming pool light bulb safely? The following procedures will help ensure that you change the bulb without harming yourself or others:
1. Turn off the breaker, the pool light switch, and the GFCI. To prevent someone from turning the breaker on while you are replacing the bulb, place some electrical tape over the switch. Also be sure to warn everyone at home that you will be changing the swimming pool light bulb.
2. Take out the small pilot screw (looks like a '+') from the light fixture close to the lens to remove the light fixture. Use the screwdriver to pry the lighting fixture out of the socket.
3. Uncoil the spring-like attachment cord to remove the light fixture. Place the fixture on the deck, and unscrew the screws around the lighting fixture. There are two fixture types: one with several screws at the back of the rim, and another with one screw that holds the band clamp, which is is attached to the fixture.
4. Remove the lens that prevents the bulb from getting wet by removing the screws. Twist the bulb in a counterclockwise direction to remove it.
5. Screw in the new bulb and place the fixture back on the deck. Turn the power back on and the switch that controls the pool lights to quickly check to make sure that the new bulb is working. Once you've verified that the light is working, turn the power and switch back off.
6. To replace the lens gasket, place the new gasket around the glass lens and apply gentle pressure to ensure it is fitted properly. Place the lens back on the fixture and replace the screws.
7. Submerge the light fixture under water to check that the gasket seal is not faulty. A faulty seal will cause air bubbles to rise to the surface. If this occurs, you will need to adjust the lens gasket until you no longer see the air bubbles.
8. Recoil the attachment cord and screw the fixture back into the socket. Turn the power back on.
Follow the above steps to replace your pool lights safely. Or, if you don't want to take the risk, you can hire a pool service professional to come to your home and replace the bulb for you. In Arizona, pool owners have relied on Shasta Pools & Spas to handle all of their pool service needs since 1968.
